When did you first know that you wanted to become a writer?
I was still in primary school. Nine or ten years old, perhaps? I didn’t write stories then, but I devoured books and knew I wanted to write them myself one day.
In your words, what is your book about?A boy who tries to find his place in this world, who doesn’t like to be told who he is and what he should do with his life.
What is the hardest part about being an author?For me, it’s first finding time to write, and second letting other people read what I write. The latter is often scary business, even when the first readers are fellow writers who always offer encouraging comments along with some painful but necessary advice on works in progress.
What is your favorite part?Writing the second draft, because that’s when things really start to fall into place. I also love it when new ideas pop into my head and I can’t wait to write them down. I have a file filled with new ideas. They typically come along when I’m busy revising or editing other projects, or when I’ve hit difficult spots on projects I’m deep into.
What kinds of things do you like to do in your free time (when not writing)?Like most writers, I read very many books every year, so I’m never without a book. I sometimes sew and knit a bit, but very often my days are so busy I don’t have time for much besides the day job and my family. In summer I ride my mountain bike on the forest trails near my house.
What book are you reading now?I’m reading a book by a brilliant Irish writer: Annie Dunne by Sebastian Barry.

What are you working on now?A cute (in my humble opinion!) YA romance with dual POV, set in my hometown.
