#HolidayBookBash Author Interview #13 with Nina Rossing

My final author interview for #HolidayBookBash is the super-talented Nina Rossing, author of the upcoming Fjord Blue. Nina's previous work, Supermassive, is included in the prize drawing.

Author Name: Nina Rossing
Book Title: FJORD BLUE
Release Date (if not already released): March 10, 2016.
Publisher: Harmony Ink Press
Genre: Contemporary YA / LGBT YA

Blurb: Seventeen-year-old Benjamin is shipped off to work on his grandparents’ remote farm in the fjords of Western Norway for the summer. It’s not like he didn’t deserve it. After all, he crashed his dad’s vintage Bonneville in a car-chase duel on a Miami freeway. Ben is mad at the world and not ready to reveal the reason for his bad behavior the past year, when he partied and got into fights to forget his attraction to his best friend’s hot cousin Dino.

Norway is cold and rainy, the farm is desolate and resists modernization, and the grandparents are quiet and religious. On to the scene waltzes Even, the eighteen-year-old farmhand, who counters Ben’s restlessness and complaints with friendship, fresh perspectives, and problems of his own.

With the mounting expectations of Ben taking over the farm one day, getting closer to Even becomes Ben’s only reason to stay put. As the friendship deepens, the two boys learn that secrets can turn into both beautiful and ugly truths, and that support can be found in unexpected places.

When did you first know that you wanted to become a writer?

I was still in primary school. Nine or ten years old, perhaps? I didn’t write stories then, but I devoured books and knew I wanted to write them myself one day.

In your words, what is your book about?
A boy who tries to find his place in this world, who doesn’t like to be told who he is and what he should do with his life.

What is the hardest part about being an author?
For me, it’s first finding time to write, and second letting other people read what I write. The latter is often scary business, even when the first readers are fellow writers who always offer encouraging comments along with some painful but necessary advice on works in progress.

What is your favorite part?
Writing the second draft, because that’s when things really start to fall into place. I also love it when new ideas pop into my head and I can’t wait to write them down. I have a file filled with new ideas. They typically come along when I’m busy revising or editing other projects, or when I’ve hit difficult spots on projects I’m deep into.

What kinds of things do you like to do in your free time (when not writing)?
Like most writers, I read very many books every year, so I’m never without a book. I sometimes sew and knit a bit, but very often my days are so busy I don’t have time for much besides the day job and my family. In summer I ride my mountain bike on the forest trails near my house.

What book are you reading now?
I’m reading a book by a brilliant Irish writer: Annie Dunne by Sebastian Barry.

What are some of your favorite books of 2015?
Jessica Verdi: What You Left Behind
Robin Talley: Lies We Tell Ourselves
Suki Fleet: The Glass House
Louise O’Neill: Asking For It
Paula Hawkins: The Girl On The Train
Jojo Moyes: After You

What was your favorite book as a child?
I had very many, but one that stands out right now is Astrid Lindgren’s “The Brothers Lionheart”.

Describe your hero in three words.
In my upcoming YA, FJORD BLUE: Impulsive, confident, vulnerable.

What are you working on now?
A cute (in my humble opinion!) YA romance with dual POV, set in my hometown.
